J.W and Mary Francis Miller Burks welcomed their beloved son Joe L.
Burks into this world on February 15, 1936, in Anderson County.
Joe was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age. He
maintained his membership throughout his life and served as a Deacon
at the time of his death.
After graduating from George Washington Carver High School, Joe
enlisted into the US Army where he played the saxophone in the military
band. When his military service ended, Joe returned to Texas where he
met and married Jessie Marie Jones. To that union, Damaan Redek
Burks was born.
While in Hempstead Texas, Joe enrolled and obtained a degree in music
from Prairie View A&M University. After graduation from Prairie View
A&M University, Joe met and married Maria Alice Raven. To that union,
DeWanna Yvonne Burks and Renard Keith Burks were born.
Joe raised his three children in Tyler, Texas where he worked and retired
from Kelly Spring Field (Goodyear). Joe had many friends and never met
a stranger. He loved life and brightened every social event he attended.
He made a positive impact on many lives and will dearly be missed by
family members and friends.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, J. W. and Mary Francis Burks.
He is also proceeded by his siblings: Dorothy Ellis, James E. Burks and
Vernell Yepp.
He leaves to cherish his memory; three children: Damaan Redek Burks
(Africia), DeWanna Yvonne Burks (Tony), Renard Keith Burks (Ontanya),
11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brother Oscar Burks and a host
of special nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
