Russell C. Phillips of Hermitage, formerly of West Middlesex, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, in his residence. He was 90. Mr. Phillips was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Sharon to Daniel S. Phillips and Roxie Bell Phillips. He was a graduate of Farrell High School and earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Westminster College. He was a teacher at Harren Hill and principal at Farrell High School for 36 years. Russ was a member of Cedar Avenue Church of God in Sharon, an elder and deacon and a former Sunday school teacher, youth fellowship leader and director for more than 50 years of the youth camp in West Middlesex. He was a former board member of the Urban League. Russ was a U.S. Army veteran. He married Mary Summers Phillips on Aug. 11, 1951. Russ is survived by three daughters, Linda Phillips Jackson (David), Robinson Township; Celeste Warren (John), Schwenksville, Pa.; and Izetta Phillips, Lansdale, Pa.; a son, James D. (Eloise) Phillips, Harrisburg, Pa.; a sister, Delores Phillips, Chicago; a brother, Dr. James L. Phillips, Houston; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary; a son, Russell Jr.; and three brothers and two sisters.
