Devoted husband and father, Walter Edward Allen, Jr., of Leesburg, FL, passed away on October 30, 2020, at the age of 82.

Born January 13, 1938 in Naugatuck, CT, Walter, affectionately known as “Al”, was the son of the late Walter Allen, Sr and Hilda (Sulitzky) Allen. He attended Naugatuck High School and the University of Connecticut. It was in Naugatuck where he met his wife, Carole Anne Weaver Allen, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, five children and 9 grandchildren. Al’s deep and abiding love and devotion to Carole is what will be remembered most by family and friends.

As a young husband and father, Walter worked as a mechanical design engineer for which he earned several patents. At the same time, he tirelessly built a home for his family in Prospect, CT, often at night and throughout the winter. He was tremendously talented and hard working and had the ability to design, build, fix and create all on his own. Walter left engineering to be a home inspector for several years before retiring. Throughout his life, he went on to build and refurbish many beautiful homes, taking great pride in them, down to the smallest details.

Al was an avid reader, with a thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed watching Jeopardy and could compete with the best of them. He and Carole enjoyed watching the UCONN Women’s Basketball team together. He also enjoyed cooking, and loved to experiment with new recipes. Al had a special affinity for music of most genres, starting out with an early love of jazz and rhythm and blues. He played the guitar and loved to sing. But mostly, he loved sharing his love of music with his wife and children.

He is survived by his “best girlfriend” (and wife) Carole, and his children Lee Allen of Seymour, CT, Susan Martin and her husband Kevin Martin of Port St. Lucie FL, Robert Allen and his fiancé Erin Ash of Scottsdale, AZ, John Allen and his wife Lori Allen of East Berlin, CT and his daughter Diane Allen DiGangi and her husband Matthew DiGangi of West Hartford, CT. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Ian Knox, Devin Knox, Galen Knox, Michael Davino, Christopher Davino, Catherine Martin, Shannon Davis and her husband Nate Davis, Dustin Allen and Haley Rentsch. Walter also leaves behind his sister Kathleen Monterose and her husband Hank Monterose of East Haddam, CT.

A private family service will be held for Walter on Thursday, November 5, 2020 in Leesburg, FL. In lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions in his name may be made to: Hearing Health Foundation, 575 Eighth Avenue, Suite 1201, New York, NY 10018 or online at https://hearinghealthfoundation.org/donate
