Later after returning home John became the owner and operator of several businesses in Alpena, Michigan: he started with the Friendly Bar from 1978 until 1984, J.J.'s Steak House starting in 1993; Bogart's Bar starting in 1997; Jeppeto's Restaurant in 2000; the Thunder Bird in 2004; the Hide-A-Way Bar in 2005; and most currently John A. Lau Restaurant.
