Irma Elizabeth Meadows Harper departed this life on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. Irma was born in Moneta, Virginia on December 18, 1932 to the late John and Lucy Meador. She worked as a nurse at Burrell Hospital for many years and retired from Roanoke City. She was a faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church serving as a member of the Pastor’s Aide and Senior Ministries under the leadership of Pastor and First Lady L.A. Lewis.

Irma was special to many people throughout her life. Meeting Irma once was all you needed to be forever engrained in her memory. She was a Mother, Grandmother, Great- Grandmother, and Friend. Irma will always be remembered for her ability to be straightforward and to never sugar-coat what she needed to say to anyone. She was very feisty and spunky and wanted her things to be left as they were. Her grandchildren can tell you many stories about her reactions to them rearranging her place. While Irma was a woman of great strength, she also expressed much sensitivity coming to tears during movies such as Free Willie, Old Yeller, Lassie, and many others. Irma enjoyed her life to the fullest, always ready travel, always ready to ride. Irma made a difference in every life she touched, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and the Greenbergs. Irma had a special bond with them, and they became an intimate part of her family.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mecarlo Nichell Burwell-Richardson of Tallahassee, FL.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons Joe Lewis Burwell Sr. of Roanoke, and John Burwell of Montclair, NJ. Granddaughters Crystal (Tyrone) Burwell Jones, LaTashia Hairston of Fayetteville, NC, La-Kesha Burwell, Shiming Burwell, Shanta (Bernard) Hash all of Roanoke, Yvonne (Joseph) Burwell-Graham of Bloomfield, NJ., Chantel (Carl) Crawley of Washington State, CA, Monique (Sterling) Motley of Ashburn, VA and Charmaine (Shurland) Charles of Northern, VA, Grandsons Joe Burwell Jr. and Lamont Burwell and Joseph Kesler, all of Roanoke, and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, family and friends.

A Special Thanks goes to all those who aided in Irma’s comfort and care over the years, especially Dr. William Ball and the Roanoke Family Medicine Staff. Also thanks goes to the Greenberg family who went above and beyond to make sure the Irma had not only what she needed but many things she wanted over the years and to Dottie Pafford who went above and beyond her duties to support Granny during the latter months of her life. Thanks to Serenity for their service and in aiding Irma in prearranging for this day.

Irma’s life will be treasured by those left to honor her memory.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, October 23, 2020 at Fair View Cemetery. She was a devoted member of Morning Star Baptist Church where she served with the Senior Ministry and the Pastor's Aide Ministry. She is survived by two devoted sons, John and Joe Burwell a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, other relatives and friend
