A German church record indicates that Elisabetha Carolina "Carolina" Christman was born on March 13, 1813, in Glan-Münchweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. She was a daughter of Georg Philipp Christman (1776-?) and Philippina Christman, née Göttel (1779-1842).
Carolina married Jacob Niergarth (1808-1861) on October 4, 1833, in Obermiesau (now a part of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau), Germany.
Carolina and Jacob had three children born in Germany:
- Jacob (1835-1920)
- Carolina (1838-1845)
- Elisabetha (1840-1861)
Their fourth child, Jacob Christian "Christian" (1846-1932) was born at sea, during the family's voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
The family initially settled in Lincoln County (now part of Niagara Region) near St. Catharines, Ontario, where their son Philip (1848-1939) was born. Around 1850, Jacob, Carolina, and their children moved to Wellesley Township. There, two more sons were born--Henry (1851-1933) and Adam (1854-1886). By the time of the 1861 census, the family had resettled in Wilmot Township, having purchased a farm three miles north of the village of Saint Agatha.
Caroline was predeceased by her husband in 1861. She died on November 10, 1875, at the age of 62 years.
