He was married in 1962 to his first wife, the actress Virginia Maskell (died 1968); with whom he had issue, two children. He was married in Westminster Abbey on July 27, 1972 to Lady Elizabeth Anson, daughter of Thomas, Viscount Anson, and Anne Bowes-Lyon, in Westminster Abbey (divorced in 2009). His third wife was Virginia Hobson, married in 2010.
