Honouring the last of another Aikens UE generation.

Bertram Jewell Brigden Aikens
February 13, 1930 - October 29, 2020
Bertram Jewell Brigden Aikens, 90, of Vancouver passed away peacefully October 29, 2020. The last in his family's generation, Bert was predeceased by his siblings Hugh, Audrey, Iola, and Bea.

Bert and Agnes, his wife of 63 years, made a prosperous life together in Kerrisdale filled with love of family, the blessings of four children, epic summers in Point Roberts, and a lifetime of adventure and travel.

After graduating from Vancouver Technical as a scholarship student, Bert started as a linesman with BC Telephone in the interior and then played key roles in the expansion of full electrical service in British Columbia with Hume & Rumble Electrical Engineers and Commonwealth Construction. He topped off a long and successful career as a senior inspector in the CSA Electrical Division where he mentored and inspired many with his work ethic and experience.

Bert cared deeply for his community and was always ready to help out, anybody, at any time. Using his artistic and craft skills, he was famous for creating, repairing, resurrecting, repurposing, building, and designing wonders from a few spare parts in stock in his magic workshop on Larch Street. He applied his touch to everything he designed and created, from cabin-building, home renovations, woodcarving, and photography. The Aikens kids always had the most creative Halloween costumes in the neighbourhood. And if there was ever a smiling contest, you can be sure Bert Aikens would win.

Bert was a true BC man. His love for the mountains and deep connection to nature was sparked by legendary winters at Hollyburn and Mount Seymour with his brother Hugh. He was an excellent skier and dedicated outdoorsman passionate about recording nature on its grandest scale and smallest detail.

Bert is survived by his wife Agnes, his son Brian, his three daughters, Andrea, Brenda, and Linda, and his four grandchildren. The family is grateful for the kindness and care Bert received at Amica Arbutus Manor, VGH, and St. John Hospice UBC. He is deeply missed and will always, and in all ways, be remembered. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Great uncle appears to be part of what the Maeatae Tribe of Scotland which were very early inhabitants of Scotland & considered Original Scots. Will not be sure until they finish analyzing his results.
The people that lived in Scotland 2000 years ago are often called Celts but in Stirling we know the name of their tribe: the Maeatae, because it survives in Stirling's most prominent hill Dumyat (Dun Maeatae: Fort of the Maeatae), just look north.
