On October 23, 2020, James Wayne Belcher answered God’s call to “Come Home”. A similar experience will be to all who know Christ Jesus.

For over 35 years, Jim’s faith was tested with progressive health issues which produced patience and a stronger trust in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Now all he has to do is rest.

Jim was born in Penhook, Virginia to the late James and Fannie Belcher on August 15, 1939. He was blessed with 81 years and two months as he used God’s word as a lamp to his feet and a light to his path.

On June 28, 1987, Jim and his baby daughter, Jamay, were baptized by the late Rev. Dr. Metz T. Coker at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. He was ordained Deacon April 16, 1989 by Dr. Coker. He enjoyed being a servant to the Pastor, church members and others in the community.

Jim was a Sports Fanatic- He cheered for them all! He always enjoyed going to games at the Salem Civic Center and Stadium with his son, Bob, until his increased health issues prevented him from attending. At that point, Bob and Jim’s son-in-law, Tony, would gather at his home, and then Richfield, to create their own ‘stadium’ in front of the television with Jim relaxing in his favorite recliner!

Jim worked multiple jobs during his working years: dairy worker, custodian, bus driver, and he retired from Tom’s Potato Chips in Salem after 28 years as a line worker and Supervisor.

He relished the early years of his grandson, Scooter, as he taught him how to be a daredevil: operating the riding mower and driving the car without a learner’s permit. Upon becoming legal, Scooter was often his Papa’s chauffer on many adventures as Jim lost the ability to drive. They often challenged each other in cards, checkers and dominoes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Marvin Belcher; four brothers, Early Belcher, Charlie Belcher, Melvin Belcher, and Pleaze Belcher; and two sisters, Vinnie Mayhan and Jimmie Bell Belcher.

Survivors to reminisce, reflect, and cherish his memory….

Wife of 48 years, Dr. Melva Holland Belcher; son, James (Deanna) Claytor, Jr.; daughter, Karen Belcher; daughter, Jamay Belcher (Anthony) Gray; one very dedicated and attentive grandson, James O. Claytor, who he affectionately called Scooter; one granddaughter, Chyna Belcher; four step grandchildren, Brandon Holland, Nephertitti Gray, Aaliyah Gray, and Zion Stores; two sisters, Shirley Cheeks and Joyce (Jesse) Seigler; five brothers, Johnny Belcher, Alex Belcher, Matthew Belcher, Willie Belcher, and Gary Belcher; brother-in-law, William Otho Holland; daughter-in-law, Selena Belcher; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

“Our citizenship is in Heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior.”

Philippians 3:20
