John was born in Mattoon, Illinois on March 2, 1962 a son of the late Wallace and Lenora (Kimball) Owen. John enjoyed growing up with an older brother who shared his love for fishing. He was also blessed with a mechanical skill and enjoyed tinkering with small engines and could fix just about anything. For 35 years John worked as a cook at various restaurants in Coles County and Effingham. Many of those years were spent in the kitchen at the Ramada Inn in Mattoon. His last employment, before his health no longer permitted him to work, was in the meat department of County Market.
John is survived by his three children, Troy Owen of Mattoon, Brianna Owen of Charleston and Kyle Owen of Mattoon; two grandchildren, Kayden and Dustin; and his brother, Wallace Owen, Jr. and wife Joi of Neoga, Illinois.
