He grew up in Elbertson, Georgia and had one brother, Dorsey Benjamin Andrew (1888-1948). He married Lettie Nobie Bell (1895-1978) in April 1916 in his hometown. They had four children during their marriage: James William Andrew Jr (1917-1995), Norma Louise Andrew (1919-2001), Belle Andrew (1923-1923), and Julia Kathleen Andrew [Osborne] (1924-1991). He was a carpenter by trade and died on July 16, 1937, at the age of 50 due to a fall from a scaffold while working construction in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
