William Edward Mayes was born January 1900 in Wilson, North Carolina. As per the US Federal Census in 1900 he resided with his father Albert & mother Annie in Black Creek, Wilson, North Carolina. His age was reported as 4/12 with him being born in Jan 1900. He enlisted as a Private in P. L. 43rd Infantry at Camp Lee, Virginia on October 16, 1919. He was discharged from the 43rd Infantry on October 15, 1920. He reenlisted October 21, 1920 in Co B 56th Infantry at Camp Meade, Maryland. Three days later he married Mary Alice Wicks on October 23, 1920 in Halfiax, North Carolina. Mary was the daughter of Richard Milton & Joanna Brough Wicks of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. William’s residence in 1920 as per the US Federal Census, Petersburg Ward 4, was Hinton Street. He was single living with his parents Albert M & Annie P Mayes, and siblings John Henry Mayes, Cleveland, Emmett, Bessie L & Mildred O Mayes. On July 19, 1921 William was discharged from CO B 56th Infantry. From February 16-24, 1924 he was refined to a National Sanitarium in Johnson City, Washington, Tennessee. This was a National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was listed as being 5”5”, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. He was able to read and write. Religion was reported as Protestant. Occupation listed as photographer. Residence Subsequent to Discharge was listed as Petersburg, Virginia. He was married at this time and his mother was reported to be living at 942 W. Washington Street in Petersburg, Virginia. July 2, 1924 he was discharged for a cause listed as aVBG027-A. He was readmitted August 23-29, 1930 to the National Sanatorium in Johnson City, Tennessee. This is where he met Josephine Thomas a nurse who helped take care of him. Josephine had a child by the name of Dorothy that belonged to William. Dorothy was raised by her mother and step-father. William died on September 12, 1933 at 7:45 p.m. at his home 1156 Shepard Street in Petersburg, Virginia. His cause of death was Tuberculosis from the War. He was buried on September 14, 1933 at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia in Ward DD, Section 7, Square 5 (E ½) Survivors were his wife Alice and children Willie Irene, Cleveland Edward, & Ella Olivia Mayes.
