US Congressman. He was elected as a Whig to represent Pennsylvania's 14th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1847 to 1849. Initially trained as a physician, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1824 and that same year helped organize the Berks County Medical Society. After operating a medical practice in Reading, Pennsylvania for several years he moved to Schuylkill County and invested in the coal and iron industries. His single term in Congress was the only time he held political office, though from 1851 to 1853 he served as Director of the United States Mint at Philadelphia, under appointment by President Millard Fillmore. With the dissolution of the Whig party in the mid-1850s he became associated with the new Republican Party. He died in Philadelphia.
