Karl Alexander, 5.Fürst von Thurn und Taxis, was the son of Karl Anselm, 4.Fürst von Thurn und Taxis, and his wife, Herzogin Auguste von Württemberg . He was married at Neustrelitz on May 25, 1789 to Herzogin Therese von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, with whom he had issue.

When his father died, he became postmaster general of the royal postal service. Upon the demise of the royal post, he began a private postal service, the Thurn-und-Taxis-Post.

Originally buried in the Klosterkirche, Neresheim. Disinerred from that location and reinterred at the current location, the St.Wolfgangskrypta, Stiftskirche St.Emmeram.
