David Eldridge Woody departed on Saturday January 30, 2010 at Brookhaven Health Care Center in East Orange. Funeral services will be on Friday, Feb. 5, at 12 noon from the Woody "Home For Services," 163 Oakwood Ave., Orange, where family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services. The interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Newark. Mr. Woody was born in Orange, N.J., on February 23, 1918 to David D. and Mary Colson Woody. He graduated from Orange High School in 1936 and Hampton University in Hampton, Va., in 1940. After enlisting in the Army in 1941, he received training at Yale University and Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he served in the 99th Fighter Squadron. After his discharge from the military, he joined his father's business, the David D. Woody Funeral Home in Newark. He later joined the staff of Woody "Home For Services" in Orange. He was the father of Doris Cynthia and the late Robert Charles Woody, and grandfather of Sholanke Woody-Hughes. He is also survived by his former wife, Saphelia Jones Woody; a great-grandson, Aiden Luke Huggins; three nieces, Mary Ann Whitehead, Irma Woody Francis and Ida Woody-Wells; a cousin, Mary Jane Myricks Fergus, other relatives and friends.
