He was born July 8, 1929 in Park Head, MD to the late Leonard W. and Cora M. (Reed) Mackereth and was the widower of Katheryn A. (Fradiska) Mackereth who passed August 9, 2017. They had been married 66 years.
Bill honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Eastern Express Trucking Company from 1953-1977 and retired as a supervisor for Shaffer Trucking Company in Mechanicsburg after more than 15 years of service.
Bill was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and enjoyed watching all sports, especially Penguins hockey with his grandson, playing golf with his buddies in the yearly Giant Food Tournament, and striking up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, whether he knew them or not. He always looked forward to working the Carlisle Events car shows for 17 years.
Bill was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1299, Carlisle, the White Circle Club of Carlisle and the VFW, where he served as past commander of Post 7527, Bedford. He was a member of Tree of Life Church, Carlisle.
He is survived by: a son, Leonard W. Mackereth, III of Montebello, CA; a daughter, Jerry Lynn (husband Paul) Myers of Duncannon; two grandsons, Jerry L. Corle, Jr and Jason L. Corle; and five great-grandchildren, all of Carlisle.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Rev. David Herr officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tree of Life Church, 50 K Street, Carlisle, PA 17013 or to Celtic Hospice & Palliative Care, 900 Century Drive, Suite 201, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
