John and Emily were married nearly 69 years when they peacefully crossed over to meet their creator in heaven a mere 13 days apart – and not due to COVID-19.
Born in the family home in Northfield, Massachusetts, John attended Mount Herman School for Boys and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a degree in education. He was also a proud Veteran serving in the Army in the post-WWII occupation of German and later in the Air Force flying B-26 missions in Korea.
Emily was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvanian. Shortly after her father passed, she and her mother settled in Northfield. Emily attended the Northfield School for Girls and, when she was older, worked summers at the Chateau Hotel. Emily attended Boston University and graduated with a degree in early childhood education.
While home on leave, John saw Emily walking down the street with his cousin and knew they would get married. Emily’s graduation photograph from the period remained beside his bed throughout the rest of his life. They were married on January 3, 1953 in the Sage Chapel at Northfield Seminary. Emily then accompanied John who was stationed primarily in France and they traveled throughout Europe.
The young couple moved to Colorado because it resembled Germany. They settled in the farming community of Arvada in 1956 where they raised their family, served the youth group at the Arvada Presbyterian Church and John was elected Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees that built the Arvada Public Library (now Community Table). Interestingly that of all places to land it was Colorado where Emily had such deep ancestral ties to the Loveland family and the railroad coming west.
John taught school for 35 years in Jefferson County primarily at Arvada Senior High. He taught American and World History and English before becoming a career counselor. He loved helping youth tap into their core strength to become the best person they could be. Many still remember John fondly and the family will always remember hearing the familiar calls of “Mr. Addison” around town.
An avid reader, John also enjoyed playing bridge (sometimes four handed) and completing crossword puzzles in fountain pen. He loved writing, football, tennis, building models and coaching soccer for his son, baking desserts, going to Rockies games with his daughter, gardening with his wife and sharing construction projects with the neighbors.
Emily taught first grade briefly before retiring to raise their two children. She remained a stay at home wife and mother for the remainder of her life. Among her greatest joys were meeting her children after school with a snack to hear all about their day and watching their family grow being happy in knowing that she married her best friend.
Emily enjoyed sewing, vegetable gardening and bringing a little east coast flair to the prairie and cooking. She adored chocolate and indulged frequently. She prepared the main dishes in the household while John contributed the brownies, pies, and cookies.
Always the team, they will continue to watch over their family and enjoy a view of the mountains in their resting place at the Arvada Cemetery; ‘up on the hill’.
