Howard was born on May 9, 1929 in Xenia, Illinois to Helen Akes. He married Dora Lou Weston and she preceded him in death on September 17, 2010.
Howard loved playing music and singing, and when he was able, he enjoyed going to "shindigs". In his younger days, Howard used to race cars at the White Squirrel Speedway, where he was known as the "Roll-Over King". Howard was always working on cars when he was younger. He loved his cat, Miss Kitty, very much, and watched a lot of Westerns. Howard will be missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Howard "Shorty" Akes is survived by his children, Russell (Brenda) Dilley of West Salem, Candie Belcher of Olney, Debbie Ross of Rochester, IN, Johnny (Shella) Dilley of Albion, Tammie (Terry) Yealick of Olney, and Howard (Robin) Akes of Olney; Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson; Sister, Imogene Wyman of Xenia.
He was preceded in death by his mother, wife, and infant son, Howard, Jr.; three brothers and one sister.
Cremation Rites were accorded.
A Graveside Service will be held for Howard at the Oddfellow Cemetery in Xenia, Illinois at a later date. Full Military Rites will be performed at the cemetery.
