TUCSON – The family of a local teenager shot and killed the day after graduating from high school is speaking out.
Julian Zepeda, 18, was found with gunshot wounds in a crashed car near the Las Villas de Kino apartment complex Friday morning. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Just the night before, Julian graduated from Tucson High Magnet School.
“He was always just so happy-go-lucky,” said his mother, Felena Zepeda. “And he had so many friends. He had so many people that loved him.”
According to authorities, a male was seen fleeing the scene. He was later located and arrested for an outstanding warrant.
The suspect is a juvenile and has not been identified. Officials with Tucson Police Department said the Gang Unit was called to the scene because one person involved in the incident was a known gang member, but did not elaborate.
Zepeda’s family said they want to make it clear that the teenager was not involved in any gang activity, and had dreams of attending a technical institute to become a mechanic.
“My brother was a caring person. He would never hurt anyone,” said Julian’s brother, Robert Jesus Zepeda. “There’s nothing I’m not going to miss about him.”
