Catherine (Kit) Hellmig Conner, 90, of Louisa, Virginia passed away peacefully at English Meadows Senior Living Community on Saturday, September 26, 2020. She was born on June 12, 1930 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Emil Hellmig and Kathryn Buelgag, and the stepdaughter of Natalie Hellmig. She married Judson J. Conner on December 23, 1955, who predeceased her on April 13, 2013.
Left to cherish her memory are her three sons and their spouses: Raymond M. Conner and his wife Gloria of Indianapolis, Indiana; Jeffery J Conner and his wife Judy of Sherman, Texas; and Daniel K. Conner and his wife Mary Katherine of Mineral, Virginia. Kit is also survived by 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Kit graduated from Fairlawn High School, New Jersey in 1948 where she played the cymbals in the marching band. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Newark German Hospital (Clara Maass Memorial Hospital) in 1950 and then worked as a pediatric nurse.
Kit will forever be remembered most as a loving mother, Army Officer’s wife and the heart of her family. She set up households where the Army sent the family including Ft Knox, Kentucky; Gainesville, Florida; Saigon, Vietnam; Alexandria, Virginia; Ft Campbell, Kentucky; and Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii. Her home often became the gathering place for the neighborhood kids who brought injured animals for her care. She volunteered at Army hospitals, elementary schools and museums throughout her life. She and Jud enjoyed retirement by continuing to travel, including trips to Russia, China and the Galapagos. She enjoyed landscape oil painting, Perry Como music and a bit of afternoon dark chocolate and later her glass of Chardonnay. She and Jud split their time between homes in Lost River, West Virginia and St. Simons Island, Georgia and then finally at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia.
Kit was loved by many and cherished by her family. She will be missed dearly and will be carried in our hearts forever. She will be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery, attended by family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association alz.org.
