Mrs. Fannie Strickland Mercer, 96, died Tuesday morning (January 7, 2003) at Baptist Village after an extended illness.

She was a native of Brantley County, but she has lived most of her life in Waycross. She was a homemaker and a member of Deenwood Baptist Church and the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class.

She is the daughter of the late Alfonso McFoid Strickland and Rosie Douglas Strickland. She is the wife of the late Alver "Abb" Leaston Mercer.

Mrs. Mercer is survived by two daughters, Lucille Thomas (husband Johnny) of Waycross, and Elvera Lee of Hoboken; a son, Ralph Mercer (wife Edna) of Waycross; a sister, Ella Allen of Waycross; grandchildren, Mike Lee, Barry Thomas (wife Shirley), Terry Lee (wife Bonnie), Bucky Thomas (wife Joni), Bryan Thomas (wife Robyn), Buffy Sanders (husband Scotty), Marilyn Williams, Kim Proveaux (husband Harlan), Jan Carter (husband Randy), and Brad Thomas; great grandchildren, Matthew and Zach Proveaux, Dustin and Tiffany Carter, Kane Lee, Breae Crews (husband Emory), Shane Thomas, Jeremy and Jason Thomas, Brenson Lee, Stacy Turkett (husband Jeff), Erica King (husband Timmy), Ashley Thomas (wife Brenna), Dylan Thomas, Amy and Mindy Williams, and Cody and Kayla Sanders; great great grandchildren, Amory Crews, K. J. and Kooper Thomas, and Joshua Thomas.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday (January 9, 2003) at Deenwood Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hoboken Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Music Funeral Home.

The Faithful Workers Sunday School Class is requested to meet 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church to serve as honorary pallbearers.
