Herbert George Montgomery Jr., 81, of Hibbing and Keewatin, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids. He was born Oct. 8, 1932, to Herbert and Josephine (Pugh) Montgomery in Rapid River Township.

He was united in marriage to Velma "Bonnie" Jean Thelen on June 5, 1956, in Lake of the Woods. Herb was employed at the Keewatin Sawmill for 24 years before establishing Stuntz Sawmill, where he worked for 15 years before retiring. Herb served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Keewatin American Legion. He was also an assistant fire chief for the Stuntz Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, snowmobiling and spending time with family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Herb is survived by his wife of 57 years, Velma "Bonnie" Montgomery; sons: George "Tony" (Robin) Montgomery, and Russel (Jackie) Montgomery; daughter-in-law, Denise Montgomery; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David "Bomba" Montgomery; three sisters; and one brother.
