Studied law and admitted to bar, 1883. V.-P. Lion Surety & Bond Co., Omaha since 1908. Mayor of Lyons, Iowa 1886-87; author of several books including Root Family Genealogy 1907.

ROOT, Joseph Cullen. Businessman. Founder of Modern Woodmen of America and founder and 1st President of Modern Woodmen of the World Insurance Companies. Root was born in Massachusetts but his father moved the family to Illinois and later Iowa. After gaining an education Root was involved with several business oppurtunities, most notably the selling of insurance. In 1883 Root founded Modern Woodmen of America, but after a falling out with other executives Root left the company. In June 1893 Root founded Woodmen of the World. The purpose of these companies was to provide financial relief for families after the father, breadwinner, of the family died. Today Modern Woodmen of American has over 750,00 members.
