John Robert Bandy was born February 11, 1939, to Mason Edward Bandy, senior, and Ura Covine (Nell) Moody Bandy in Gilmer. He died October 25, 2020, in Tyler.
Johnny moved to Athens at a very early age and spent most of his life there. He was a 1957 graduate of Athens High School, a 1961 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State College, and a 1975 graduate of East Texas State University's Master of Science program.
During his college years he received a National Science Foundation/Atomic Energy Commission scholarship to study advanced sciences during the summers at the University of Arkansas and at Sam Houston State University.
He served his country in the United States Army Reserve from 1957 until his discharge in 1963.
After college, he worked in Houston in research chemistry. His specialty was working to create more efficient drilling fluids for the oil industry. He then moved back to East Texas where he was a dedicated educator, teaching math, chemistry and physics and serving as head of the science department for 36 years at LaPoynor High School.
He took pride in seeing his students grow into successful, accomplished adults and was always blessed when they told him he had been an inspiration to them. He was well known at LaPoynor for his dry sense of humor, his firm classroom standards, and his very creative ways of waking up sleeping students.
He also enjoyed teaching two vocational courses, General Electricity and Heating and Air Conditioning. During this time he ran his own air conditioning business, Bandy Air Conditioning, and continued to do so after retirement until 2016 when his health began to decline and his grandson ably took over the business, carrying on the family name.
He loved the outdoors, spending many hours hunting, gardening, boating, and fishing. He took pleasure, along with his good friend and co-worker, Bill Pagitt, in catching enough big catfish to fry for the LaPoynor faculty the last day of each school year. He also enjoyed cooking outdoors for friends and family. His Christmas Eve ribs were a much-anticipated tradition.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Billy Moody Bandy; a nephew, David Bandy, a niece, Catherine Holloway, and many true friends.
He was survived by his wife of 35 years, Karon Bandy; his brother, Mason Bandy and wife, Katherine of Granbury, and his children: Robert Edward Bandy and Bobette, Richard and Melissa Bandy, John Russell Bandy, and Kelli Boyd and husband, John.
Other survivors were his grandchildren: Lorell Celis and Chance Bandy; Jillian Barragan and husband, Mark; Robby Bandy and Cheyenne; Sarah Shultz and husband, Brent, and Brennan and Judson Boyd.
His great grandchildren were Brock Gayaut, Presley Gayaut, and Piper Celis. Also, Kaiden Torti, Olivia Barragan, Charli Barragan, Zaylee Bandy, and Karter Shultz.
