Graveside Services were held in Thompsonville cemetery last weekend for James Story Bates Sr. native of the area who was killed earlier in the week at his home near McAllen Tx.
Bates who was 65 was born in Waelder and moved to Rio Grande Valley in 1925 with his family. He graduated from Misson High School and attended Edinburg Junior College before receiving his law degree from the University of Texas.
He served as district attorney for Hidalgo County in 1950s.served as a state representative and was a state senator through th 1960s,leaving office in 1972.
He is survived by a son James Storey Bates Jr. and two daugthers Barbara Ann Bates, Laura Lou Bates and mother Frankie Davis Bates.
