WILLIAM D. (“WILL”) Griffith (1855 – 1890)
Will Griffith was born in Georgia in 1855, the oldest of nine children of Benjamin Franklin Griffith and Lucinda Elizabeth Latimer. Ben and Lucinda and their first four children moved from Georgia to Washington County, Texas (near Brenham) in the 1860s, around the end of the Civil War. Will Griffith married Mary Ann Rolsten on November 16, 1881. Will was shot and killed on January 4, 1890 at the age of 35 in what we believe to be Lee County. His untimely death left Mary Ann a widow at the age of 30, with four children under the age of seven. Mary Ann continued farming in Alum Creek after Will’s death, initially assisted by her brothers Robert Rolsten and Thomas Rolsten and later by her two youngest sons, Edgar Wayne Griffith and Benjamin Franklin Griffith II. In the final years of her life, she lived with her oldest son Charles Eugene Griffith and his family.
