Former Auxiliary of San Cristobal de la Habana and Bishop of the Titular See of Vergi, Monsignor Salvador Emilio Riverón Cortina was born in Florida, Province of Camagüey, Cuba, on July 7, 1948, and was ordained to the priesthood aged 33, by Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino on March 3, 1982.

At the age of 50, on April 24, 1999, Cortina was named as Auxiliary for the See of San Cristobal de la Habana, Cuba by Pope John Paul II, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Vergi by the named Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, assisted Archbishops Adolfo Rodríguez Herrera and Pedro Claro Meurice Estiu.

Suffering from advanced stages of cancer, the Bishop died at the early age of 55, on Sunday, February 22, 2004. His body lies interred at the Cristóbal Colón Cemetery, in Havana.
