Ernest Dan McIntosh Sr., age 94, of Douglasville passed away Sunday, October 25, 2020. He was born in Bowdon, GA on June 25, 1926 son of the late Ernest Barnett McIntosh and Louise Huey McIntosh.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Runell, on January 10, 2003; brother and sister in law, Huey and Georgia McIntosh; sister and brother in law, Abbie Mae and Robert Abercrombie. Survivors include sons, Dan Jr. and Rhonda McIntosh of Vinings, GA and Rusty and Susan McIntosh of Bowden, GA; grandchildren, Carrie and Clark Barnard of Dallas, TX, Jennifer and Phillip Carroll of Carrollton, GA, Amanda and Matt Payton of Carrollton, GA, Hayley and Adrian Dodd of Bowdon, GA, Meredith and Bobby Thomson of Brown City, MI and Daniel and Brittany McIntosh of Bremen, GA; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Carson and Lilly Carroll, Mayley and Maggie Payton, James Dodd, Luke and Lola Barnard and Jaxson McIntosh.
Dan was a graduate of Douglas County High School, 1943. Following graduation, he was accepted to The University of Georgia, however, with WWII being fought, he chose to enlist in the US Army. He served his country during WWII as a Tank Commander and Instructor at Fort Campbell and Fort Knox.
Dan was a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was an original charter member of West Pines Golf Club, President of the Douglasville Jaycees, and the Douglas County Tiger Club. Dan was a well respected and successful auto mechanic whose career included Thornton Chevrolet and John Bleakley Ford from where he retired. He was an avid fan and follower of the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs.
Dan McIntosh was a man of unique talents who enjoyed several hobbies at various times during his lifetime. Among those hobbies were breeding of Cocker Spaniels and Boxers - his puppies were highly sought. He also enjoyed a lifetime hobby of model trains, including collecting as well as building towns and villages including bridges and landscape features. His favorite model was the HO gauge. At one time his collection included over 250 various cars and engines of all types including replica Southern Railroad engines which he painted to detail. He also enjoyed collecting small replica automobiles from the 40's, 50's, 60's, a collection which exceeded 150 at one time. Dan was also quite adept with his hands building anything from book shelves, cedar chests, if he saw it he could build it. He also enjoyed restoring and refurbishing furniture for friends in his workshop. Gardening was another hobby - he enjoyed growing tomatoes, beans and peppers which he looked forward to sharing with family and friends.
Dan and Runell traveled America in their motorhome, from South to North, East to West and parts of Canada. They visited 35 states, and several Canadian provinces. In October and November, Dan and Runell could be found at their second home in Steinhatchee, FL fishing every day in the river and flats. They enjoyed the peace and quiet and friendships they made in the small fishing village. Dan McIntosh was a man of happiness, kindness, joy and honor who loved his family and the Lord.
