Oliver entered the US Army Air Corps in November 1942. He trained as a B-17 Flying Fortress gunner and crew chief, and went overseas to England. SSgt Keefer was assigned to the 427 Bomber Squadron, 303 Bomber Group, 8th AF.
On Dec 20, 1943 SSgt Keefer was a crewman on B-17 42-31233 flying a mission against Bremen, Germany. The aircraft was attacked by an Me110 fighter aircraft, and crashed near Bremen.
SSgt Keefer’s remains were returned to the US aboard the transport Carroll Victory. The community held a public tribute to honor SSgt Keefer, and his funeral was held on Dec 13, 1948, with local veterans organizations providing military rites.
