Obituary for Roy Lee Owens
Roy Lee Owens, age 87, of rural Golconda, Illinois passed away October 12, 2020 at his son’s home in Kevil, Kentucky.
Roy was born in the Tansil Community of Pope County, Illinois on November 7, 1932 to Charles Earl and Verna (Jones) Owens. Verna passed away when Roy and his brother were young, and
Charles married Gladys Pearl Dunning of Bay City, Illinois.
He was a United States Army veteran who served during the Korean war. On September 6, 1958 Roy married Viola Belle Taylor of Golconda, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2011. Roy worked at the Caterpillar plant in Peoria, Illinois in the early days of their marriage. Later, he made a career of and retired from the Army Corps of Engineers working at Dam 52 in Brookport, Illinois and the Smithland, Illinois Lock and Dam. Roy was a Free Mason. He was a believer in Ford auto. Back in the day, he was an avid ham radio operator. He loved to fish or talk about fishing, but mostly only in Arkansas.
Roy is survived by two sons, Alan Lee Owens and wife Penny of Kevil, Kentucky, and Brian Roy Owens of Paducah, Kentucky; two half-sisters, Debora Jean (Owens) and husband Thomas Lyn Simmons of Golconda, Illinois, and Evelyn Bernice (Owens) Turner of Chester, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Peggy Woodward and husband James Woodward of Bountiful, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a half-sister, infant Jewel Nadine Owens, his brother, Clarence Raymond Owens, and a brother-in-law, Herschel Glen Turner.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October, 17, 2020 at Massac Memorial Gardens in Metropolis, Illinois.
