He was the son of James Trowbridge Eells and Nancy Comstock; his parents married in 1802. Marcellus married Susan Antoinette Randell in December 1837 in Harlem, NY. They had 7 children: Mary Eells Elmendorf, John Randell Eells, Anna Eells Ferrero, Harriet Eugenia Eells Keller, Catherine Carlton Eells Green, and James Randell Eells. Marcellus and Susan appear on the 1850 census in the 12th Ward, NY City, NY. He was a widowed gentleman merchant with property worth $17,000 on the 1860 census in the same place. Also enumerated with him on the 1860 census was his widowed sister, Amanda Jerrard (age 55), his mother, Nancy Eells, and his children. He died of typhoid fever. Amanda executed his probate in November 1864; she graduated from the NY Medical College for Women in 1873 and her own probate was 5 February 1887 in Pleasants County, West Virginia, which may explain Marcellus' earlier death in that state. She may have later had a medical practice in West Virginia.
