The book states that Zuma Allred, age 7, was killed at Belle Mina by a Memphis & Charleston train after she wandered onto the tracks. She was with her mother, identified only as Mrs. Allred and Zuma’s four siblings, ages infant to 9, when the mother realized she took the wrong train from Decatur and wanted to go back, according to court records. She and the children waited inside the Belle Mina depot for the midnight train when she claimed “the depot agent for about half an hour before the train’s arrival tried to induce the child’s mother to have carnal intercourse with him, which she refused to do; and he finally caught hold of her and cause her to scream, which awakened and frightened the child and caused her to run out onto the tracks.”

The lawsuit asked for $10,000 from the railway. The initial ruling was in favor of the defendant but a higher court ordered a new trial on a technicality. Read the ruling here. The outcome of that trial was not readily found.
