ALTHA, Fla. — Albert Butler Chatham of Altha and State Road, N.C., died peacefully on April 3, 2014, after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by a multitude of family and friends whom he loved dearly and who loved him in return. Born on Dec. 20, 1955, to Hugh Gwyn Chatham and Mary Morehead Chatham, Albert grew up on his beloved Klondike farm. He attended Elkin City Schools, Asheville School, and Brandon Hall, where he developed a lifelong love of art and history. A skilled writer and poet, a designer of houses, a sailor and fisherman, and someone who never met a stranger, Albert enriched the lives of all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at Galloway Memorial Church, 213 W. Main St., Elkin. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; Human Rights Campaign, 1640 Rhode Island Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20036; or a charity of the donor's choice.
