Memorial service for Retired Col. Joseph Thomas "Tom" Prendergast, 91, of Decatur will be Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at noon at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church with Father Ray Remke officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.
A military graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
Col. Prendergast, who died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at Decatur General Hospital, was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minn. He held a degree in engineering from Oklahoma University, a master's degree in engineering from Ohio State University and a master of business administration degree from George Washington University. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1940 and served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired from Redstone Arsenal in 1968. While serving, he received The Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Army Distinguished Service Medal from Vietnam. His wife, Isabel Cullen Prendergast, preceded him in death.
Col. Prendergast is survived by his son, Joseph T. Prendergast II of Vienna, Va.; his daughter, Barbara P. Sikorski of Harvest; twin brother, Retired Col. John Donald Prendergast of Decatur; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
