David " Dave" Wallace Schmidt, Sr., 72, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away October 17, 2020 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on February 9, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Donald and Frankolene McMurphy.

David worked as a meat inspector from 1976 to 1981 in Dodge City, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas. The family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1981 where he went to work for the Hutchinson Post Office as a dedicated mail carrier until his retirement in 2005. Never one to sit still, he went to work for Conklin Cars in 2006 as a courtesy driver, serving hundreds of Conklin patrons.

He loved the outdoors spending time hunting and fishing, and was also a member of the CKGC. He enjoyed taking part in action pistol contests as well. He enjoyed daily trips to the South Hutchinson Diner for coffee and tea and good hearted family conversations. After coffee he would stop in and visit with the staff at Shooters Supply.

On December 1, 1968, Dave married the love of his life, Linda D. Hull in Hutchinson, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his wife, Linda; 1 daughter Angela Schmidt Mendoza; 1 son, David W. Schmidt, jr.; 1 grandson, Alex ( his fiance', Courtney Hurst) Mendoza; 2 brothers, Douglas ( Cathy) McMurphy, and Dale McMurphy; 3 sisters, Della Landrove McQueen, Diane ( Jack) VanRiper, and Donna Baxter; 2 great grandchildren, Asher and Averi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Frankolene McMurphy; 2 brothers Ellsworth Hardin and Danny McMurphy.

Per his request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date due to COVID 19 restrictions and will be shown via ZOOM social media. A public celebration gathering will be held in the spring of 2021 for all friends and family to attend, share and remember their favorite stories.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Reno County Animal Shelter and left in care of Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home, 528 north Main Street, Hutchinson, Kansas 67501.
