Margaret Ann Schmitz, 90, of Oconee, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Mattoon Health Care, Mattoon, IL. She was born January 18, 1930 in Maywood, IL, daughter of the late Aloysius & Irene (Merklin) Schweitzer. She married Charles Schmitz on February 1, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oconee and he preceded her in death on May 10, 2000.
Margaret was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oconee where she served as President of Share and Vice President of the Ladies Society. She was also a member of the Oconee American Legion Auxiliary, where she was treasurer for 14 years. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards and especially bingo. Margaret extended her willingness to serve others by working as an R.N. for 33 years.
Margaret is survived by her children: Joetta Bordner, Decatur, IL; Denis (Mary) Schmitz, Pana, IL; Carolyn Ginger, Mattoon, IL; Charlotte (David) Bailey, Mattoon, IL; Donald (Janie) Schmitz, Oconee, IL; grandchildren: Stacey Root, Brandon Bordner, Christopher Schmitz, Adam Schmitz, Timothy Ginger, Robert Ginger, Jenna Case, Bryan Bailey, Chad Bailey, Kyle Schmitz, Eric Schmitz; 16 great grandchildren and siblings: William “Bill” Schweitzer, DePue, IL; Ed Schweitzer, Cisco, IL; Virginia Mrotzek, Tucson, AZ; David Schweitzer, Rock Creek, OH. Margaret was preceded in death by her son Ronald Schmitz; son-in-law Gary Bordner and brothers Joe Schweitzer and Don Schweitzer.
A funeral mass for Margaret will be held Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Pana with Rev. Rodney Schwartz officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Oconee. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the church with a rosary at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials in lieu of flowers and in Margaret’s honor may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oconee and will be accepted by McCracken-Dean Funeral Home who is assisting the family.
