Thomas is the subject of a book written by James Ryan Haydon, 1934, "Chicago's True Founder, Thomas J. V. Owen". It states he died October 15, 1835. The following obituary was published in the Illinois Weekly State Journal, Springfield, IL, on Oct. 24, 1835, which corroborates that date:
"The Chicago American of the 17th, thus announces the death of Col. T. V. Owen - "It is our painful duty to announce the death of our worthy and highly esteemed fellow citizen, Col. Thomas V. J. Owen, Indian agent at Chicago, which occurred at this residence on Thursday evening, the 15th inst."
His body was removed to Oak Ridge Cemetery from Hutchinson Cemetery in October 1866. Hutchinson was closed due to city ordinance and the majority of bodies were moved to Oak Ridge.
