Obituary:
John C. Gibbs was born in Canada, December 12, 1837, and was therefore 76 years old last month. He came to the States when a small child. He located here some 43 years ago, coming here from North Bangor, and this has been his home ever since until about a year ago when he moved to Plessis.He was a man of sterling worth and high character, honest and industrious. Much of his life was spent on a farm south of this village.He enlisted in the Civil War in August, 1862, in Co. H 106th Reg. N.Y. I. Vol., and served nearly three years, when he was honorably discharged on account of having been wounded in battle.He has long been a faithful member and supporter of the Methodist church. He was twice married, and is survived by the second wife, one son, E.B. Gibbs, of this village, and one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Johnson, of Chateaugay, besides several grand children and great grandchildren, also one brother, James Gibbs of this village.
And in The Adirondack News Saturday, Jan. 31, 1914. The remains of John C. Gibbs arrived here from Plessis last Saturday evening and his funeral held at the M.E. church Sunday morning, a large number of his relatives and friends being in attendance. Melvin Gibbs and Mr. and Mrs. John Gibbs came home from Chateaugay, and others from out of town where were called here to attend the funeral were: Mrs Leslie Johnson, Mrs. Ralph Titus, of Chateaugay, Mrs. Leslie Gibbs of Derrick and Mrs. Daniel Bostick, of Potsdam.
