John was the son of Samuel Gibbs & Amy Babcock. He had light hair, light complexion, blue eyes, 5'-10". He was born December 12, 1837 in Russeltown, Huntington Co., QC, Canada, (John C. Gibbs was the sixth and the last that would be born a native of Canada) and died January 21,1914 in Plessis, Jefferson Co., N.Y.. He was buried in St. Regis Falls, Franklin Co., N.Y. in Forest Cemetery. John was a civil war veteran. John enlisted on August 13, 1862 at Malone, Franklin County NY, at 24 years old, to serve three years. He mustered in as a private with the NY 106th Regiment Volunteer Infantry, Company H on August 27, 1862. He married Mary Jane Race about 1861. After John's brother, Ichabod died, John married his brother's window, Mary Jane Race. Mary had three children with Ichabod ( Carlos Gibbs, Mary May Gibbs, and Evaline Abidine Gibbs). When she married her brother in law, John Charles Gibbs, they had three children together Elbanard Gibbs, Samuel Elmer Gibbs (which they named after John's father) and Elsie Jane Gibbs. When Mary Jane died he remarried Jocelia Gould Parker January 9, 1913 when he was 75 years old.

Obituary:
John C. Gibbs was born in Canada, December 12, 1837, and was therefore 76 years old last month. He came to the States when a small child. He located here some 43 years ago, coming here from North Bangor, and this has been his home ever since until about a year ago when he moved to Plessis.He was a man of sterling worth and high character, honest and industrious. Much of his life was spent on a farm south of this village.He enlisted in the Civil War in August, 1862, in Co. H 106th Reg. N.Y. I. Vol., and served nearly three years, when he was honorably discharged on account of having been wounded in battle.He has long been a faithful member and supporter of the Methodist church. He was twice married, and is survived by the second wife, one son, E.B. Gibbs, of this village, and one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Johnson, of Chateaugay, besides several grand children and great grandchildren, also one brother, James Gibbs of this village.

And in The Adirondack News Saturday, Jan. 31, 1914. The remains of John C. Gibbs arrived here from Plessis last Saturday evening and his funeral held at the M.E. church Sunday morning, a large number of his relatives and friends being in attendance. Melvin Gibbs and Mr. and Mrs. John Gibbs came home from Chateaugay, and others from out of town where were called here to attend the funeral were: Mrs Leslie Johnson, Mrs. Ralph Titus, of Chateaugay, Mrs. Leslie Gibbs of Derrick and Mrs. Daniel Bostick, of Potsdam.
