Michael Keith Tedder, 57, passed away on October 17, 2020. He was a resident of Atlanta for many years, but Perry was always home.
He is survived by his loving parents, Jack and Janice Tedder, brothers Kent (Denise) and Wayne (Liz), his nieces and nephew (Jennifer, Kenton, Emma, Sierra, Bella and Genny), and his partner, Doug Prince. He was predeceased by grandparents Gary and Susan Jackson, Herman and Henrietta Tedder.
Michael graduated from Taylor County High School in 1981, then from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and moved quickly to Samford University Cumberland School of Law, graduating in 1989 with a Juris Doctorate degree. He passed bar exams in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida on first attempt, all in the same year, very soon after graduating.
Michael was a leader from a young age. He was active in student council in junior high and high school, serving as President of Student Council at both schools, and went on to be president of his law school Senior Class. He was a humble leader with strong character, often doing pro bono legal work for people in need.
Michael made friends for life. Many of his closest friends were those he grew up with in Perry, some to whom he was related, and those he met competing in 4-H, regionally and nationally, and from Birmingham and Atlanta. He cared deeply for friends, and they, him.
Genealogy was of great interest to Micheal. He spent years researching his family tree, not just documenting all of his relatives’ names, but also their stories. He spent thousands of hours with family, collecting their history, especially his Aunt Pat Sheofee. He was proud of his family heritage and always had a fascinating anecdote to share about a long lost relative and Taylor County history.
And what a storyteller he was. Always well researched, his stories were highly entertaining, and his laugh still echoes in our ears. He told stories not just from historical archives, but also through his own fiction and artwork. He was creative, studied, and prolific with his research and work.
Michael Tedder was larger than life at times. It seemed everyone knew and instantly liked him. Many of Michael’s friends from Perry have been asked more than once “You’re from Perry? Do you know Michael Tedder?” When these stories were reported back to Michael, he would laugh and reply ‘it ain’t easy being Michael Tedder’.
And for all of us who knew and loved him, we are grateful that he was Michael Tedder, and he will be deeply missed.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Carlton Cemetery on Carlton Cemetery Road. The family prefers attendees to wear masks and practice social distancing.
