He was the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (McArthur) Church Sr. He was raised in the Walworth, Wisconsin, area and graduated from Walworth High School in 1949. He owned and operated the Walworth Lumber Company, which had been in the family since 1870. Leonard was active in his community and was a longtime member of the Walworth Fontana Rotary Club, where he served as president. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #286.
