Dr. Morley A. Jull, international known expert on poultry and former head of the University of Maryland's poultry department, died yesterday at Prince Georges County Hospital. He was 74.

A university spokesman said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death. Dr. Jull had undergone an operation recently, the spokesman said.

Professor emeritus at the university, Dr. Jull served as head of the poultry department for 19 years before his retirement in 1955.

A poultry science building opened at the university in 1954 was named Jull Hall in his honor. This laboratory was one of the things he worked for from his earliest days as head of the department.

Dr. Jull was selected in 1952 by the Poultry Science Association as the outstanding teacher among poultry department members in the United States.

His pioneering research helped produce the improved strains of birds housewives can buy today.

While with the Department of Agriculture before going to Maryland. Dr. Jull developed the idea of a "family-size" turkey and initiated the breeding program that led to the development of the Beltsville white turkey.

Since his retirement, Dr. Jull had been a consultant on poultry to the governments of Greece, Egypt and Lebanon under the International Co-operation Administration.

A prolific writer, he was the author of four books, among them the first American book on poultry husbandry. He also wrote many articles and bulletins.

Dr. Jull was a past president of the Poultry Science Association.

Before taking over as head of Maryland's poultry department, Dr. Jull was senior poultry husbandman for 13 years with the Agriculture Department.

A native of Ontario, Canada, he was director of the poultry department of the poultry department at MacDonald College, McGill University, Montreal, and poultry commissioner of the British Columbia Department of Agriculture before coming to Washington.

Dr. Jull received his bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto, his master's from McGill, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

He leaves his wife, Marian, of the home address, 6906 Pineway, College Heights: a son, Moreley A. Jull, Jr., of University Hills, and two sisters and three brothers, all of Ontario.

Services will be at the University Chapel at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. Private burial will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

The family asks that expressions of sympathy be sent to the Morley A. Jull Memorial Fund in care of Dr. Shaffner, Poultry Department, University of Maryland, College Park, Md.
