Wife of Hugh James & Frank Runyan

Ellen was the 8th child of Nathaniel and Rebecca (Coons) Staples and the family moved to Jefferson County, Indiana from Kentucky in about 1820 where Ellen grew to womanhood. After the death of her parents by 1845 she went to live with relatives in Illinois where she met and married Hugh James in Hancock County, Illinois on December 11, 1849. They had three children together: Charles Martin James b. 1850, Will Henry James b. 1852, and Mary Ellen James b. 1854. Her husband was killed on April 14, 1854 by a stray bullet leaving her a widow with three small children. The children went to live with her brother and wife, Samuel and MaryAnn Staples in Bear Creek, Hancock County, Illinois, and Ellen remarried to Frank, aka Franklin Lewis, Runyan. Frank and Ellen had five children together (her other children did not live with them): John Runyan b. 1856, Benj Franklin Runyan b. 1858, Dora Runyan b. 1860, Bud, aka Marcellis Monroe, Runyan b. 1863, Armilda Jane Runyan b. 1865. Her second husband died in about 1880 in Missouri and Ellen lived the remaining years of her life with her Runyan children. (from Audrey Staples)
