It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that the congregation of the Frederick Church of God of Prophecy announces our beloved pastor, Bishop Walter Carey Cox (Brother Cox) received the call from our Heavenly Father to come home on Sunday October 18, 2020.

A native of Bayou La Batre, Alabama Brother Cox’s dedication to serving God began at the young age of ten (10) when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. His passion for the Word and love for God fueled his desire to help others find the peace and security that he found by accepting God. In 1960 he entered into the ministry with the Church of God of Prophecy pastoring his first church in Indiana. Over the years, Brother Cox committed to teaching the Word of God at a total of seven (7) churches within the Church of God of Prophecy organization.

The beginning of every church service started off with a huge smile and a boisterous shout out “Everybody Happy say Amen!” and a closing “shake hands and be friendly” sent the congregation home with a feeling of unity and positivity for the week ahead. An avid musician, Brother Cox was able to play the piano but was most known for his guitar, banjo, and mandolin picking abilities.

In 1973, Brother Cox was asked by church officials to go to Frederick, Maryland to see if a church could be established in that locality. Upon arrival, Pastor Cox immediately began to hold church services. After conducting a revival, Brother Cox organized the Frederick Church of God of Prophecy (FCOGOP). Brother Cox remained with the Frederick Church until 1984 when he was reassigned to another Church in Maryland until 1988 when he again took up the reigns of pastoring the Frederick Church he established. In 2008, after working full time in the insurance industry as well as devoting every other moment to the ministry, Brother Cox decided to retire, However, his passion for God and the love for the members of the Frederick Church brought him back in 2012 where he remained as Pastor until our heavenly Father’s faithful servant was called up into heaven.

Brother Cox is now reunited with his sons Kevin and Brian who preceded him in glory. Waiting to see him again is his wife of 62 years Brenda and son Greg, daughter in law Caro, grandchildren Brandon and Britney and countless individuals that have had been influenced by a true man of God.

Although saddened, we rejoice in the confident knowledge that he is at peace, resting in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Services are currently being arranged by Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick Maryland. Additional information regarding services will be posted once finalized.
