Samuel J. Peters, 79, of 1202 Mount Vernon Ave., Huntingdon, went to be with the Lord at 8:22 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020, at AristaCare at Huntingdon Park.

Born Oct. 24, 1940 in Homestead, Allegheny County, he was a son of the late John R. and Esther Mae (Wagner) Peters. He was united in marriage to the former Faye Snare in 1972, at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Huntingdon. Mrs. Peters survives at their residence.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Karen Rinehart and her husband, David, of Red Lion, Susan Kauruter and her husband, David, of Alexandria, and Elizabeth Sharpless and her husband, Matthew, of Huntingdon, seven grandchildren, Abigail and Natalie Rinehart, Kelsie Eichelberger and her husband, Alex, Brandon and Ellie Kauruter and Jackson and Sydney Sharpless.

He is also survived by a brother, Terry L. Peters and his wife, Nancy, of Vienna, Virginia.

Mr. Peters was a member of the Emmanuel Bible Church, Huntingdon.

He was a member of the Huntingdon County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and was an active volunteer for Huntingdon Meals-on-Wheels.

Mr. Peters was a graduate of Huntingdon High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Juniata College, Huntingdon, and his master’s in education from Shippensburg University.

He was a history and English teacher who began his career in the Indian Valley Schools and subsequently taught for many years in the Huntingdon Area School District until his retirement.

Mr. Peters was an avid sports enthusiast who loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and Huntingdon football games. He was especially a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Penn State Nittany Lions. He was also an avid history and Civil War buff, and enjoyed taking casual walks throughout town while socializing with others.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Emmanuel Bible Church, 9945 Emmanuel Drive, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Gregory Harven officiating. Interment will be in the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Penn Township, James Creek.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Friday, Oct. 23, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in remembrance of Mr. Peters may be made to the Emmanuel Bible Church, 9945 Emmanuel Drive, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
