Charlotte Diane Helmick Payne was born on November 12, 1946, in Clarksburg, WV the middle child of Allen B. “Stretch” and Giula (Davis) Helmick. Most of her life she went by her middle name Diane.
Her family moved from Clarksburg, WV to the Northern Panhandle to work in Weirton Steel. Diane, as she was known by her family and friends, grew up in New Cumberland, WV, and graduated from Oak Glen High School in 1964.
While bowling at the Steel Valley lanes she met George Payne. They were married on September 3, 1967. In their 53 years of marriage, they were blessed with two children and four grandchildren.
George worked at Weirton Steel and Diane worked for Milton Zinaich’s State Farm Agency in Weirton. Even though they both worked outside the home, Diane and George’s life centered around their church and family. They never missed a game or an event that their family was involved with.
Faithful dedication with humility, courage, and independence would best describe Diane.
