Freddie John Willis was born on August 13, 1937 in Houma Louisiana. He was the youngest of 7 siblings born to Kervin Willis and Olevia Williams-Willis.

In 1960, he was drafted into the US Army where he spent the next 31 years serving his country throughout the world. His career included tours of Vietnam, Turkey, Germany, and the United States. As a paratrooper, he served with the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, NC and the 101st Airborne unit in Fort Campbell, KY. He retired honorably in 1991 settling in Nashville TN with his wife of 51 years, Philomenia S. Willis and son, Richard Kervin Willis.
