Julian O’Neal “Neal” Smith, Sr., 85, went home to be with the Lord on October 9, 2020, a resident of the Sentara Hospice House.
Born in Greensboro, NC, in 1935, the youngest of 6 children, he married his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Lou Kivett Smith on January 23, 1954. He worked in the furniture and textile industries and as an automobile mechanic.
He served as an enlisted man in the United States Army and took basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC, and he and Mary Lou moved to Virginia Beach, VA. He was a longtime member of Pungo Church of God and loved southern gospel music. A railroad enthusiast, he would travel to see trains and railroads museums when he had the chance. But most of all, Neal loved his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, William Claudius Smith and Carrie Eva Collins Smith, and a daughter, Rhonda Kay Smith Dix.
Survived by his wife; children, sons, Julian “Chip” (Elaine) Smith Jr and Chuck (Brenda) Smith; daughter, Lena Rice; grandchildren, Ellen, Jennifer, Christine, Ryan and Joseph; 5 step grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He is gone but never forgotten.
