William Harrison Board
(1842 ~ January 02, 1895)
1842 – 2 January 1895

William H. Board has been in ill health and for the past few months has been confined to his bed, hence his death, which occurred Wednesday last, was not unexpected. It comes with no less sorrowing force to the family on that account, however, and while they must realize, under the circumstances—with no hope of recovery—it is better for him and for them, yet it seems almost impossible to take this view of the matter. We are never ready to give up our loved ones even when we know that death means life to them: that it is the end of all their suffering; the evening of their sorrow and the dawning of eternal peace. In spite of our wishes and desires, the will of God is law and we must submit.

Deceased is well known to all of the older residents of Galena, and while his life may not have been free from blemish, it remains for a higher power to sit in judgment upon it and it becomes us to close our eyes to any faults that may exist and to dwell only upon his virtues.

His family—a wife and four children, two boys and two girls, are held in high esteem by the entire community. The fact that he has reared his little family in such a manner as to merit the respect of everyone is greatly to his credit and we know his parting must have been less painful on this account. He must have felt that the future of his children is safe in the hands of the mother to whom still greater credit is due; the mother whose teachings, counsel and guidance has been heeded and now yields fruit to strengthen and sustain her in this hour of great sorrow.

Our sympathy goes out earnestly to this loving mother and the fatherless children and while we can do nothing, perhaps, to lighten the pain at their hearts, we can assure them that the God in whom they have placed their trust, will not desert them in this dark hour—He will not make the burden greater than they can bear.

I wonder if that is all of the marker, or the rest on it and the given names is hidden?
