Served was the 7th of 12 children (11 sons and 1 daughter) born of Preserved Fish (1770-1840) and his wife Abigail Carpenter (1772-1852). His siblings were: Russell (1792-1878), Daniel (1794-1880), Leonard (1796-1883), Leicester (1796-1855), Betsey (1798-1891), Aram (1801-1804), Hiram (1805-1891), Bradley (1807-1885), Enos Clark (1809-1888), Alanson (1812-1840), and Harrison (1815-1867).

Served moved to Whitehall, NY with his 1st wife, Anna & their son Franklin (1830-1899) in 1834. Their 2nd child, Daniel was born in 1835. Served married for his 2nd wife, Sally Ann Offensend (1828-1898) by whom he had two children: Preserved O. (1851-1904) & George H. (b. 1855).
