SAN LEANDRO / Spurned love blamed in teen murder-suicide

Unrequited love led an upset teenager to kill his girlfriend on a sidewalk not far from San Leandro High School before he took his own life, police said Friday.

Investigators said 17-year-old Alejandro Fajardo shot Nayanci Gonzalez five times in the back with a pump-action shotgun Thursday morning because the 14-year-old had made it clear to him that she wanted to end their relationship.

"It looked like the relationship was being terminated, and he couldn't deal with it," said police Lt. Marc DeCoulode. "For some reason, he took the course of action that he did."

Nayanci was walking to San Leandro High, where she was a sophomore, when Alejandro pulled up in a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro at 136th and Wake avenues. He got out, approached her from behind and opened fire without saying a word, DeCoulode said. He then shot himself as horrified classmates looked on.

The two met several months ago at a party, but Nayanci had since decided to end the relationship, police said.
